Kathi started to keep children more than 20 years ago. At first they all fit into her home, but now almost 100 children live in three houses. In two or three weeks we hope to have Marjorie’s House up and running. As of September this year we have 23 toddlers in Kelly’s House. We hope relatives will claim most of these, now that they are weaned.
35 babies in Eleanor’s House include 17 HIV positive babies and 5 others being treated for Tuberculosis. As soon as Marjorie’s house is ready we will move sick babies there. So far this year we have received 14 new babies. Relatives have claimed fifteen children, and seven have died.
Eric’s house keeps an average of 40 children aged 2-20. Newcomers this year: Elvis lost his parents, Mapenzi was an orphan on the verge of becoming a street kid, Wezi and John were once street boys, and Gwembe is a retarded boy. Social Welfare brought Gwembe to us. Thugs had beaten him severely enough that he was hospitalised. He didn’t know his family name, nor how to go home. The hospital didn’t want to just turn him out into the street. I liked the boy immediately I saw him, and I thought he would be an important addition to our family, to help our kids learn that all kinds of people are God’s children.
